Is A BRIDGE TO SHARING THE CARING OF OUR LOVED ONES

The Wexford Residence Inc. Family Council’s mission is to serve as a support group, as well as a liaison, between residents’ families, friends, staff and management to enhance the quality of life and quality of care for all our 166 residents.


OUR FAMILY COUNCIL GOALS ARE:

  • To provide mutual supports for families and friends of residents, in particular those that are new residents to the facility.
  • To raise awareness and understanding among families, friends, staff management and external stakeholders of needs and concerns of residents.
  • To maintain two-way communication between families, friends and the facility.
  • To advocate on behalf of all residents and their families and friends.
  • To share ideas for the purpose of problem solving and/or enhancing the caring environment of the residents.
  • To engage all stake holders in an ongoing process of identifying and developing programs and services to improve the well being of all residents


MEMBERS’ ROLES ARE:

  • To welcome new residents and their family members/friends to adjust to this overwhelming new situation that involves getting acquainted with a whole New World of a painful reality.
  • To present any concerns and suggestions we may have to the Director of Care or Administration to help the Wexford Residence Inc. keep and maintain its high standards and reputation.
  • Support bereaved family members in their time of grief.
  • To educate ourselves on topics such as
    - Understanding the importance of family and friends visiting the residents more often
    - Care of loved ones with Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Diabetes, Strokes
    - Elder Abuse, Care for Caregivers
    - Anticipatory Grief, What to expect in the Final days/hours.
    - Staff roles, their duties and responsibilities that educates us as a group
    - In-Service training on wheel chair use, how to lift, move or exercise a family member

Members of our Family Council shall be relatives and friends of the residents of The Wexford Residence Inc.  Relatives and friends of a deceased resident are encouraged to continue their active participation as members. 

FAMILY COUNCIL MONTHLY MEETINGS ARE SCHEDULED ON THE

2nd Tuesday of every month, 6:30 to 8:30 pm. in the Wexford Board Room

6:30 – 7:00 Family Council socialize with light refreshments to get to know and support each other in the caring of their loved one.

 

Please contact the Chairperson at (416) 495-0983 if you

  • are interested in participating in the Family Council activities and attend the meetings
  • would like to acknowledge and commend an employee for going “over and above” their assigned duties
  • have a concern(s) or suggestions for enhancement and would like to discuss it privately
  • are unable to visit your loved one often and would like to meet to discuss visitation by Family Council members
  • would like to be kept informed of Family Council activities via email

We abide by the Powers of Family Council as per section 60 in Bill 140:

A Family Council of a long-term care home has the power to do any or all of the following:

  1. Provide assistance, information and advice to residents, family members of residents and persons of importance to residents, including when new residents are admitted to the home.
  2. Advise residents, family members of residents and persons of importance to residents respecting their rights and obligations under this Act.
  3. Advise residents, family members of residents and persons of importance to residents respecting the rights and obligations of the licensee under this Act and under any agreement relating to the home.
  4. Attempt to resolve disputes between the licensee and residents.
  5. Sponsor and plan activities for residents.
  6. Collaborate with Wexford Staff, community groups and volunteers concerning activities for residents.
